SEEDS

Seeds are incredibly generous.

One flower, from one plant, produces more than enough seed for a garden, and if you think about it, it’s almost as though the plant is asking us to sow a seed forward or to pass on this gift. When I understood this for the first time, a tiny seed planted itself in my heart too, and began to grow into a bigger story.

I realised the power we have in our back gardens, on our balconies or even our windowsills, to grow plants that can heal and feed and bring joy to us. And the only thing more incredible, is that we can share all of this and plant possibilities in our communities too.

Never let it be said that to hope is a waste of one’s time. For hope is our realities in waiting and love is the heart of everything.

Why Wildflowers?

Unlike many other plants, wildflowers need minimal care and usually thrive in poor soils. They pop up against all the odds, and help bees, butterflies and other creatures thrive, too. They transform any dull green garden into a charming oasis and of course, I love gardens full of flowers. Lots of flowers. They’re beautiful, they’re valuable, and they’re survivors.

How to Grow Cornflowers

Cornflowers bloom from June to September.  They’re so easy to grow!  In May, find a patch of bare soil in a sunny spot and scatter on the seeds.  Press them lightly into the soil and water. The bees will love them!

Cornflowers and poppies are a perfect match for me.

There’s much folklore surrounding cornflowers but my favourite of all is reading that people believed the sky was sending down pieces of itself to the fields and that’s why it was scattered with the beautiful blue flowers. Indeed, how lovely it would be to once again see that iconic image of rural blue meadows which were once a common sight. Happy cornflowering, friends!

How to Grow Bee & Butterfly Mix.

Sow wildflowers as a meadow or in a bed in spring time. Ideally seeds are best planted in an open situation where the butterflies will bask in the full sun. This is a beautifully special mixture that will attract pollinators in abundance!

Normal soil, moist or dry, but will perform best where there is some soil/moisture retention and the soil doesn’t dry out too fast.

If bees could talk, I believe they would ask us to change the colour of our grey world to beautiful shades of rainbow colours. They would ask us to plant more wildflowers and the seeds would shed and carry on the wind to create more colour in those empty spaces. How glad that would make them, friends!
